La Human Rights Campaign, una agrupación de Estados Unidos que trabaja en defensa de los derechos humanos, ha cifrado la participación de la Iglesia Católica en las campañas que se están lanzando en contra del matrimonio igualitario.
Los Estados norteamericanos de Washington, Maryland, Maine y Minnesota están acogiendo estos días el lanzamiento de numerosos anuncios a favor y en contra del matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo.
Dichas campañas se están publicando con el objetivo de influir en el voto de la ciudadanía en el referéndum en torno al matrimonio igualitario que tendrá lugar el próximo seis de noviembre en Washington, Maryland, Maine y Minnesota.
Según ha dado a conocer la Human Rights Campaign, la Iglesia Católica y la Organización Nacional por el Matrimonio (NOM), una agrupación estadounidense contraria al matrimonio igualitario, son responsables del 60% de las donaciones que han financiado las campañas contrarias al reconocimiento del matrimonio de parejas homosexuales.
La Human Rights Campaign ha cifrado en 4,1 millones de dólares el dinero que habrían recaudado los opositores al matrimonio igualitario en Washington, Maryland, Maine y Minnesota.
De dicho importe, 1,1 millones de dólares habrían sido puestos por la Iglesia Católica para impedir el reconocimiento del matrimonio igualitario, mientras que la Organización Nacional por el Matrimonio ha puesto otros 1,4 millones de dólares para financiar las campañas homófobas en contra del derecho de la ciudadanía homosexual a unirse en matrimonio.
